Event - Year 6 visit St Columban's
18 September 2025
Year 6 visited the St Columban's society to complete some activities and reflect on our upcoming Confirmation.
We started our day meeting James, who told us about the work they do. St Columban's participate in God’s mission and help to establish a world of peace with justice and care for the integrity of creation in solidarity with poor, exploited and marginalised communities. James also showed us some items he had collected on his travels helping others, including: a plastic water bottle turned into a tree sculpture and a real frog that was now a purse!
We then split into groups. Our first activity was going to the stable. In the stable, there was a window that looked out onto the beehives that St Columban's look after. We were able to watch the bees going in and out of their hives. Did you know each hive has about 40,000 bees? While we were there we sat around the craft table and made bees out of corks, tape and whiteboard markers. There were lots of these handmade bees hanging from the wooden roof to inspire us.
Next, we went on a nature walk in the grounds and we worked in groups to make a pattern out of the materials we could find, like: acorns, leaves, grass and even berries! Our final activity of the day was pond dipping. At the pond, we used buckets to collect samples of water and explored closer using a small net. We did really well with this, we even found several rare newts!
